The oxide quest beginsDecember 10, 2008
Here is the first day of the oxide quest. As you can see there are subtle but definate diffferences among the three batches. The bar in the middle was made with water. The one on the left spent time in the freezer before going in the fridge. The one on the right skipped the freezing step. Part of the difference this time lies in the amount of colorant. For the water batch I only used two .15cc scoops of colorant. The other two batches got three scoops. For some reason I expected the oxides to produce a deeper color. That doesn't seem to be true. At least with brown. And while it is hard to tell from the photo the bar that got frozen has a nicer color. Brown oxide leaves spots in the soap, although not as many as I was seeing in the lake colors. It doesn't disperse very well at all in oil, but does a better job in water than the lake powders. Lessons learned from this batch: If all oxides react the same way oxides don't produce as rich a color as the FD&C lake colors, and freezing does produce a slightly richer color. We shall see if the tests of the other colors support these conclusions. Stay tuned.
