Lake Colors

December 4, 2008

3 bars of orange soap 2 bars of green and 2 bar of blue soap

This is the last week for FD&C lake colors. As you can see from the pics I tested two colors. To obtain the lovely orange color I used .45cc of yellow and .15 cc of red. On the left is the bar that was in the freezer, then in the fridge. The bar in the middle spent some time in the fridge and the bar on the left also went straight into the fridge. This time although it is fairly clear that color works better in soap that has no milk, the difference in color between the frozen and nonfrozen batches is virtually non-existant.

The soaps on the other plate were made with .30 CCs each of yellow and blue. Again the differences between the frozen and non-frozen batches are insignificant. Since blue turns lavender in non-milk soap it is no suprise that the bar made with water is lavender. The green is a little bit duller than I would like, but it does qualify as green.

Lessons learned: Yes Virginia, not only is there a Santa Clause you CAN make pretty colored milk soap. And yes the FD&C lake colors will work. However I can't recommend them. They don't disperse well in either water or oil, they tend to leave spots in the soap and the colors don't consistantly remain true.

Next I will be testing oxides. So stay tuned I expect them to behaive better.
